I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve had to delete photos because a friend (OK, or me) objects “I have three chins in that picture!” And if you’ve ever taken a selfie, I bet you’re with me on that, amirite?
But fear no more, photo re-takers: A new trend is sweeping the internet that is sure to make you more comfortable in your own chin(s).
Women are now “chinning” on Instagram to fight all those so-called perfect photos we see on social media. When you’re chinning, you purposely adding at least one extra chin to all your selfies.
It all started with Instagrammer Michelle Liu, who dedicated an entire Instagram account — @chinventures — for pictures of her world travels, and her chin, of course. She takes no shame in her double chin among gorgeous backdrops, all in an effort to remind others to stop taking how we look so seriously.
“My chinning entertained my friends all through middle school, high school and college, at which point I decided to share my chin with the world,” Liu told The Mic. Now, with the help of a selfie stick, she’s chinning all over the world.
From Tiananmen Square…
…to the Palace of Westminster…
…to even a special fall chinning adventure.
“Strangers always notice me chinning. Some appear shocked, others confused, but across the board from my experience, they are usually entertained,” she told Mic.
In an age when more people die from taking selfies than they do shark attacks and phones are automatically airbrushing our pictures, taking a purposely goofy-looking photo is seriously just what we need. The rest of the internet seems to agree, with more than 20,000 followers on Liu’s Instagram account and women (and some men!) joining in on the chinning adventures.
Yes, this is how we protest body image pressure in 2017, people — and it’s glorious. None of us are perfect and honestly, most of the photos we see on Instagram are fake in some way anyway. That’s what filters are for, after all. It’s a way of showing that you don’t take yourself or how you look too, too seriously.
If you’d like to join in on the chinning adventures, all you have to do is upload a photo to Instagram with #chinning. You’ll be joining a thousands of others in leaving perfection behind and just having fun.
