Tom Hanks Did Pushups On The Oscars Red Carpet With A U.S. Army Staff Sergeant
This was a cute moment!
The slightly confused Army staff sergeant quickly caught on that the “Forrest Gump” vet wanted to challenge him to several push-ups, which he did to the cheers of his fellow soldiers, before the camera cut away to a commercial.

Hanks, 63, seems to be a fairly fit guy, having once stopped mid-jog in Central Park to take pictures with a bride and groom. And as his own Twitter (and Instagram) bio says, “Sometimes I’m in pretty good shape, other times I’m not. Hey, you gotta live, you know?”
Those who caught the brief push-up moment during the Oscars red carpet telecast appreciated Hanks’ vigor.
Twitter user Thomas Ryan said, “You da man, just saw you doing some push ups with a soldier. Thank you for being awesome!!”

Hanks also has a reputation for portraying and supporting military service members. His Oscar-winning portrayal of Forrest Gump showed the character in several memorable boot camp, Vietnam war and post-war scenes. In addition, Hanks portrayed a WWII Army captain in 1998’s “Saving Private Ryan” and has been involved behind the scenes in several other war movies.
The Army Rangers gave Hanks an honorary membership into the Ranger Hall of Fame after his “Saving Private Ryan” role, for which he was nominated for an Oscar.
During this year’s Oscars show, Hanks gave a brief speech plugging the soon-to-open Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which is being built by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He also gave a nod to the late actor Kirk Douglas, who died last week, by ending his speech with one of Douglas’ most famous lines:
“It’ll be a very big deal, we’ll see you there, and I am Spartacus!” he said, according to People.
Hanks was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor award for his role as Fred Rogers in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” And although he didn’t win (Brad Pitt did), he continues to wow his many fans.
While receiving a lifetime achievement award at this year’s Golden Globes, for example, he teared up thanking his family for their support.
It’s just hard not to like the guy!
