John Lennon Wrote And Recorded Instant Karma In One Day 47 Years Ago

Most of us can barely finish a moderate to-do list in one day.

But musical genius John Lennon wrote AND recorded an entire song—”Instant Karma!”—starting the moment he woke up on the morning of January 27, 1970 and ending that night in the recording studio.

Less than a month after the day he wrote and recorded the lyrics, (which famously include “Well we all shine on/Like the moon and the stars and the sun”) the single was released both in the states and in England.

Though the single lacked the “meticulous level of studio craft” the Beatles were famous for, it still performed staggeringly well. “Instant Karma!” became a world-wide hit, and even became the first single by a solo Beatle to sell a million copies.

Lennon was recorded as saying, slightly hyperbolically, that he “wrote [the song] for breakfast, recorded it for lunch and we’re putting it out for dinner.”

But the song’s near-instantaneous release onto the music scene is strongly in keeping with its ideals of swiftly executed karmic justice. These ideals resonated with the music world so much so that the song immediately shot to No. 5 on the charts after its release on February 6, 1970.

Not even two weeks later, Instant Karma! was released in the U.S., where it blasted its way to No. 3. The song blew onto Top 10 lists in a number of other countries as well, including Canada where it matched the United States in becoming No. 2.

“Everybody was going on about karma, especially in the ’60s,” Lennon said in a famous interview with David Sheff, “but it occurred to me that karma is instant, as well as it influences your past life or your future life…that’s what people ought to be concerned about. Also, I’m fascinated by commercials and promotion as an art form. I enjoy them. So, the idea of instant karma was like the idea of instant coffee: presenting something in a new form. I just liked it.”

Though “Instant Karma!” was a great triumph for Lennon, bad news was on the way for the Beatles. Just two months after the song’s release, Paul McCartney officially announced the band’s split.

You Have To Hear This Dad’s Rendition Of ‘Tennessee Whiskey’

Who needs singing competitions when you have your own budding music career thanks to YouTube and Facebook?

Texas dad Kris Jones now has over 25 million combined views of his rendition of “Tennessee Whiskey,” thanks to a video his daughter posted on social media. They were driving around when Jones’ daughter turned on her camera phone and started recording. With the instrumental (or karaoke) version of the song playing through the stereo system, you can hear Jones belt it out and hit those high notes like it’s nothing.

His daughter, having a front-row seat to the action, can’t help but giggle and mime the words along with her talented father. If I ever need a wing-woman, I know who to ask!

In a Facebook Live video, Jones, a 38-year-old father of three, says that he knew his daughter was taping him throughout the song. But he didn’t know she would post it on her YouTube channel, Daylafulla. After it went viral, he was blown away by the reaction to his pipes.

Some said he should try out for singing competitions. He did try out for “The Voice,” but was rejected. But, with the fanfare he is getting on social media, maybe he will decide to give it another shot! Two of his videos, “Whiskey and You” and “Simple Man,” each have hundreds of thousands of views so far.

Growing up, Jones was a part of the church choir. There’s a 30-minute video of him singing “Amazing Grace.” After his start in gospel music, he gravitated toward country music. He loves old souls like Sam Cooke, but he can also sing songs written by Garth Brooks and Keith Urban.

But nothing can top Jones’ cover of Chris Stapleton’s cover of George Jone’s “Tennessee Whiskey.” He might even be able to give Justin Timberlake a run for his money!

Dave Grohl and Daughter Violet Perform Together

Speaking of incredible father-daughter duos, Violet Grohl, the 12-year-old daughter of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, recently joined her dad on stage to perform a cover of Adele’s song “When We Were Young” during the Notes & Words benefit concert in Oakland, California. We must say — we’re impressed!

Violet had no problem hitting the high notes as her dad accompanied her on guitar.

Watch the awesome performance from the May 12 show below:

Audience members got two for the price of one because later in the show, Grohl’s younger daughter, 9-year-old Harper, joined her dad and sister to sing backup on Foo Fighters’ 2017 song “The Sky Is a Neighborhood:”

Harper’s skills are just as impressive as her sister’s, and it’s clear Grohl is super proud of his daughters.

Harper and Violet recently appeared in the music video for “The Sky Is a Neighborhood,” in which Grohl directed them. Although many of us know him as a prolific musician, when it comes to his kids, Grohl is just Dad.

“You have to realize that my children don’t see me as a famous rock musician,” he explained to Rolling Stone. “They see me as a slobbish dad and especially when it comes to a director … It’s funny, they were much more cooperative making the video than they are when it’s time for them to clean their room or go to bed.”

Despite their obvious talent, Grohl says his daughters’ lives are largely like those of any other kids, and that they spend a lot of time doing things like watching slime-making tutorials on YouTube and skateboarding.

If they’re interested, I think these two have great potential to follow in their dad’s footsteps with careers in the music business. The bright lights of the stage and a screaming audience clearly didn’t bother them!

Watch Ed Sheeran Sing ‘The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’ Theme Song—You Can Thank Us Later

I’ve got one question for you: Where has Ed Sheeran been? He’s been a little MIA lately, hasn’t he? But actually, that doesn’t even matter anymore, because he is back and better than ever.

Not only has Sheeran dropped two songs off of his forthcoming album, “Divide,” but he’s also just made our lives by singing “The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air” theme song, aka the best TV theme song of all time, in the most Sheeran of ways.

This song was already great, but of course, Sheeran took it to a whole new, acoustic level. He was being interviewed by a radio station when he was hit with an impromptu request to perform the song. He seemed a little caught off guard at first, but he immediately picked up his guitar and began to sing.

Of course, he recited the lyrics from memory, because who doesn’t know that theme song by heart?

If you think Sheeran’s performance is basically the best thing ever, you’re in good company with, oh, basically the rest of the internet.

His new album, “Divide,” officially drops on Mar. 3, according to his social media, but you can pre-order it as early as Jan. 13.

He’s already released the entire list of songs that are going to appear on the album, too. Of course, seeing their names isn’t as good as hearing them, but since this is Sheeran we’re talking about, you better go ahead and pre-order. The album is sure to be nothing short of amazing!

Sheeran has been able to stay off of our radar by using a flip phone, according to Hello Giggles. He wanted to keep his New Year’s resolution and stay away from social media for a while, but now that he’s brought his music back into our lives, I think we can probably forgive him for that, right?

This Guy Rapping About Giving His Cat A Bath Is A Viral Internet Sensation [Video]

The West Coast’s top cat rapper has taken the internet’s obsession with cats to a whole new level.

This live Facebook video of self-proclaimed “cat rapper” Moshow, who hails from Portland, Oregon, went viral after it hit social media last week.

The video features Moshow (whose real name is Dwayne Molock) washing his cat, Ravioli, in the tub. Moshow cheerfully serenades the furious-looking feline with some soothing verses: “Rub a dub dub, gotta give, gotta give my cat a scrub / Ravioli, acting like they know me…”

Since Moshow posted it on Facebook, the video has been viewed more than 1.7 million times.

Before any animal rights activists get up in arms about the ethics of using a grumpy, damp cat as a music video prop, Moshow wants us to know: Ravioli really did need a bath.

When someone ask you “Do you really LOVE your cats?” hehe ?❤?? HAPPY THURSDAY EVERYONE!!!!!!! #TheCatGod #TheCatRapper #MoGang

In an interview with Oregon Live, the rapper said all of his cats were due for a bath that day. According to Moshow, his four hairless Sphynx cats need regular baths to stay clean and healthy.

Moshow said he hadn’t written anything before getting into the tub with Ravioli. He was just inspired and came up with the rhymes on the spot.

KITTIES!!!! ??? They love me! Big big surprises coming soon with @oregonhumane Can’t wait to share!!!! GET READY CAT FAMILY!!!! It’s gonna be EPIC! ??? #TheCatGod #TheCatRapper #MoGang

“I’ve been rapping since I was 16. I rap all day everyday; I just can’t turn it off,” he told Animal Planet last year. “I LOVE CATS and I’m extremely close with mine.”

In an interview with Willamette Week, Moshow explained more about his creative process.

“I grew up in the projects, so I was rapping gangster stuff and pretending a life that I didn’t really live,” he said. He soon stopped rapping about those subjects, though, because he “just didn’t feel comfortable rapping about things I didn’t do.”

Prepare for trouble! Make it DOUBLE! Lol SISTA SISTA! ??????? #SushiHana #TheMightyMegaMam #TheCatGod #TheCatRapper #MoGang

In college, he clicked with a friend’s sphynx cat. That friend later became his girlfriend, and Moshow the cat rapper found his creative inspiration.

This isn’t Moshow’s first brush with online fame. In early December, he partnered with the Oregon Humane Society on a video that features him rapping about the joys of cat parenthood.

The video, “Adopt a Cat,” encourages Oregon residents to adopt a feline friend.

Is this furr-tastic or what?

New Kids On The Block, Paula Abdul And Boyz II Men Announce 2017 Tour

They were the soundtrack to an MTV-powered era. Hook filled songs (and videos!) like “Forever Your Girl” from Paula Abdul, “Step By Step” from New Kids On The Block (AKA “NKOTB”) and “End of the Road” from Boyz II Men left a lasting mark on the ’80s-’90s Walkman generation.

So dust off your high top Reebok Freestyles, those Miami Vice shades and your neon jacket, because all three of these acts are coming to a venue near you beginning in May of 2017.

“We’re bringing happy back,” said New Kid Donnie Wahlberg on The Today Show, where they made the announcement. Tickets are on sale now for this package tour which kicks off in Columbus, Ohio on May 12 before making its way around the country. (I worked in radio in the 1980s and 1990s, so when I say New Kids created a Beatles-like hysteria in downtown Cincinnati, I am not joking.)

Here’s the “Total Package” tour schedule, and Ticketmaster’s got the tickets.

As Matt Lauer noted during the announcement, the three acts have sold more than 200 million albums collectively. There are sure to be some superfans purchasing tickets right about now. Maybe you’ve seen Boyz II Men or NKOTB in recent years, but Abdul hasn’t toured in more than two decades!

Pentatonix’ Rendition Of ‘Hallelujah’ Is All You Need To Hear Today

Grammy Award-winning a cappella group, Pentatonix, has done it again!

After releasing this beautiful “Jolene” cover with Dolly Parton in 2016, the group dropped a holiday album titled, “A Pentatonix Christmas.” On the album is a rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”  And we have to warn you… It will give you serious goosebumps. The cover of this classic song is truly beautiful, making it feel like the holidays year-round! Check out the song and the music video below.

Since its release, the music video has gone viral, and Pentatonix fans have gone wild about the new song.

#PTXHallelujah is by far my favorite rendition of Hallelujah, so incredibly moving. It brings me to tears. Thank you @PTXofficial

— cait , 7DREAM COMEBACK (@mrkhycklvr) October 21, 2016

Just heard my new favorite song ever. #PTXHallelujah is so awesome. Please give it a listen. @PTXofficial

— Travis Taylor (@Travis_Taylor01) October 21, 2016

In addition to “Hallelujah,” “A Pentatonix Christmas” features 10 other holiday songs, each more wonderfully stunning than the last. From a modern twist on the classic tune “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” to a peppy take on NSYNC’s song “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays” and a few originals, this is a must-have on your holiday list!

We have a feeling that this version of “Hallelujah” would warm even Scrooge’s heart during the holidays.

Love this song? Make sure you check out this 1,500-person choir singing it with Rufus Wainwright (who performed the version made popular from the movie “Shrek”).

Bob Dylan Wins Nobel Prize In Literature

Bob Dylan, arguably one of the world’s greatest singer-songwriters, has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition,” according to the Swedish Academy.

The news was met with both joy and criticism. The permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, Sara Danius, said she hoped the Academy would not be criticized for its choice and said it had “not been a difficult decision”.

She explained the academy’s decision:

“We’re really giving it to Bob Dylan as a great poet – that’s the reason we awarded him the prize. He’s a great poet in the great English tradition, stretching from Milton and Blake onwards. And he’s a very interesting traditionalist, in a highly original way. Not just the written tradition, but also the oral one; not just high literature, but also low literature.”

She went on to say:

“I came to realize that we still read Homer and Sappho from ancient Greece, and they were writing 2,500 years ago,” she said. “They were meant to be performed, often together with instruments, but they have survived, and survived incredibly well, on the book page. We enjoy [their] poetry, and I think Bob Dylan deserves to be read as a poet.”

Blonde On Blonde

The winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature is chosen by the 18 members of the Swedish Academy, who are looking for “the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction,” according to Alfred Nobel’s will.

Dylan is the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature since Toni Morrison earned the honor in 1993. His award follows comments in 2008 from Horace Engdahl, then secretary of the Nobel Prize jury, that “the US is too isolated, too insular. They don’t translate enough and don’t really participate in the big dialogue of literature … That ignorance is restraining.”

Today, it seems Dylan’s genius has transcended that former view. “For the times they are a-changin’.”

The Beatles ‘Yellow Submarine’ LEGO Figurines Are Almost Here!

Beatles fans will no doubt fondly recall the epic animated masterpiece “Yellow Submarine”  that was released back in 1968. And now, The FABS are ready to set sail once again (wait, do you “set sail” in a submarine?) in their vintage Yellow Submarine—this time in LEGO form.

Let’s have a little mood music, shall we?

This totally FAB set will feature the Liverpool Lads John, Paul, George and Ringo, and Jeremy, a character from the movie. The 550+ piece set will be out November 1, retailing for $59.99. Mark your calendars, folks! We are guessing this is going to be at the top of Beatles’ fans holiday wish lists this year—young and old alike.

The iconic sub measures 5 inches high, 9 inches long and 2 inches wide. Definitely reminds me of this swell Corgi die-cast model.

The really amazing part is that this collection started as a crowdsourcing concept via the LEGO Ideas website, where fans can propose ideas for new LEGO sets. A designer (we assume he’s a Fab Fan) named Kevin Szeto came up with the idea and designed the set himself:

“As an amateur musician and songwriter, I have always been drawn to the music of The Beatles. The creation of the Yellow Submarine model was really my way of showing my affection for The Beatles, as well as trying to pay a small tribute to The Beatles phenomenon. The Yellow Submarine is bright, fun, and colourful, which also made it a good subject to translate into LEGO form.”

Grown-Up Hanson Just Performed An Amazing Acoustic Version Of ‘MMMBop’

Who remembers Hanson? They were the teen heartthrob band of the ’90s that made it big with their hit song ‘MMMBop.’ The song has always been a tough one to cover due to the challenging chorus, but luckily the real trio can still belt it out.

The brothers just performed on ABC’s Greatest Hits and dropped an amazing acoustic version of their hit song.  There’s only one guitar and their voices. They’ve definitely still got it. Isaac Hanson is on guitar and Zach and Taylor just sing their hearts out.

This Little Boy’s Laugh Attack Is The Best Thing Ever Caught On Video

OK, there are a lot of great videos circulating on the internet, each of them begging you to stop what you’re doing and watchrightnow!

But, believe me when I tell you, you MUST stop what you’re doing right now and watch this video of a little boy’s thorough and infectious amusement during music class. He can’t stop laughing, and after watching, I can’t either.

The video was filmed at an early childhood center in New York, and it shows one very happy little boy having the best time ever during a musician-led sing-a-long with his class. We’re talking a red-faced, knee-slapping laugh attack here.

I think my favorite part is seeing how his unbridled joy spreads to his fellow classmates. Knowing what we do about the power of laughter, do yourself a favor and have a good laugh with this little cutie.

Watch Seal Make A Street Performer’s Day With Impromptu Duet

Earlier this month, a Montreal-based street performer was just about to close up his guitar case and head home when a fan approached.

The musician, Jason Deeh Pitre, had seen the man watching him from a nearby bench as he played, but only when the man started talking did he realize the man was Seal. According to Pitre’s blog, the British singer complimented his performance and then asked if he could sing with him.

Pitre said he suggested a Seal song, but “Kiss From A Rose” singer suggested “Stand By Me,” the 1961 Ben E. King classic.

One of the people watching from the crowd captured the impromptu performance on video.

This Broadway Sing-Along Is The Best Carpool Karaoke Yet

No one’s more likely to kill at karaoke than a Broadway star.

James Corden, the host of the Late Late Show, proved that to be true when he invited Broadway stars to join his latest session of “Carpool Karaoke.” The premise of Carpool Karaoke, if you aren’t familiar, is that Corden invites guests to join him in a sing-along as they drive. Musical greats such as Adele, Jennifer Hudson and Stevie Wonder have all joined him for a spin and sing around town.

The Broadway edition featured guest Lin-Manuel Miranda, star of the runaway Broadway hit “Hamilton,” and fellow Broadway stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jane Krakowski and Audra McDonald. Together the five belt out showstoppers from “Hamilton,” “Rent,” “Jersey Boys,” and “Les Miserables” (because could it be a Broadway edition without “Les Mis”?).

Watch and try not to sing along!

While the media coverage of Prince’s death is fading, he’s still in the hearts and minds of a lot fans.   The Syncopated Ladies, a Los Angeles based tap dancing group, just created a pretty mesmerizing tribute to Prince’s “When Dove’s Cry,” and it has us pretty speechless.

Justin Timberlake Released His First Song In 3 Years And It Will Be The Song Of The Summer

Big news over the weekend…Justin Timberlake just released his first single in three years.  Three years, Justin? That’s just way to long. The good news is that the waiting was worth it, because the new song, Can’t Stop The Feeling, is amazing.

Here Are The Year’s 50 Biggest Hit Songs Packed Into One Sweet Mashup

This mashup, named 50 Shades of Pop, brings together the top 50 songs of the year into one slick track.  Created by Jordan Roseman, aka DJ Earworm, the video has everything from Adele to Drake.   Jordan has been doing these year end summaries since 2007 and they seem get better each year.

I love this video because it’s basically a 5 minute summary of the entire year in pop music.

Watch This Epic Mashup Of 2015’s Top Songs

Daniel Kim has done it again! A Vancouver DJ, Kim takes the top songs from each year and blends them into an unbelievable mash-up.

You thought that UpTown Funk video mash-up was good? Your jaw is going to drop when you hear the sick beat he carefully crafted.

If Part I’s 4 minutes and 31 seconds of pure musical bliss weren’t enough (above), Kim created Part II just for you (below). And I’ve got it here. Dance on, my friends.

If you watch his YouTube Deconstruction video, Kim shows you how he painstakingly created this audio masterpiece. In his Deconstruction video, you’ll see that in some places he has over 10 sounds/songs/beats/tracks playing at once – crazy! Want the full versions? Head over to Kim’s Soundcloud page.

If you’re like me and want to add these to your playlist, simply open the track in Soundcloud and enter the URL into an mp3 converter. I use to add mashups like this for to personal collection.

Adele Is Back, And Better Than Ever With Her Hit Single, ‘Hello’

Adele hasn’t released a song in three years, but that doesn’t mean she’s lost her edge.

Released on October 23rd, her song, “Hello” smashed records with 1,112,000 downloads in a one week period. According to Billboard, her song slashes previous record holder, Flo Rida, and his “Right Round” song. In February 2009, his song accumulated 636,000 downloads in a one week period.

The song’s video has been making waves as well with over 61 million streams in a week. There is only one song that has outplayed Adele’s “Hello” – the “Harlem Shake” by Baauer, with 103 million streams in a one week period.

Perhaps one person that may not be thrilled by Adele’s success? Taylor Swift, as Adele’s video was the “second-fastest video to reach 100 million views on YouTube and broke Taylor Swift’s record for single day views on Vevo,” reports Entertainment Weekly.

With chart toppers like, “Set Fire to the Rain,” “Someone Like You,” and “Rolling in the Deep,”  her third album, 25, will most surely be another hit. Will you buy Adele’s third album, 25, when it’s released on November 20th?
