Meditation is becoming all the rage, with people looking to apps on their phones, adult coloring books and even glittery mason jars for relaxation outlets. But the newest meditative trend is coming straight out of Netflix, and it involves “Slow TV” shows that are meant to be put on in the background to help you relax. It might sound a little strange, but people are loving it.
These shows are giving a whole new meaning to the “Netflix and chill” phenomenon. On Slow TV you can watch mesmerizing scenes like a crackling fireplace, women knitting or a train ride through the countryside. These shows have been popular in Norway—where the films come from (like the one below from Norwegian state broadcaster NRK)—but ever since Netflix added them to their library in August, it’s catching on in the U.S. as well.
Here are some of the responses to this new offering:
Life hack: those Slow TV things on Netflix are very calming to watch while your mom describes the various women she could set you up with.
