Netflix’s ‘Dear White People’ Gets A Rare 100% Rating On Rotten Tomatoes
Here's why you need to add this show to your watch list.
Netflix’s new show “Dear White People” is shutting down naysayers after earning a highly coveted 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The scripted show, which depicts black students at a fictional Ivy League university, faced some pretty harsh criticism when the trailer debuted in February. Some people accused the streaming service as being “anti-white” and started using the hashtag #BoycottNetflix.
When the criticism first began, creator and executive producer Justin Simien quickly responded on Twitter: “Equality feels like oppression to the privileged and thus three benign words send them into a fight for their very existence, which happens to it actually not [being] in any real danger. This is how a minute long date announcement becomes a distorted call for white genocide in the minds of some people. Despite all signs to the contrary.”

Since then, Simien said the backlash actually helped promote his show. It appears likely that it did, with the 10-episode series making its way to a 100 percent rating in less than a week after premiering on April 28.

“Dear White People“ explores the various forms of racism and other types of discrimination experienced by black students and a predominantly white college. The show is described as “timely, provocative, and sharply written” on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics saying it “is an entertaining blend of social commentary and incisive humor.”
While not entirely unheard of, getting a 100 percent rating is still a pretty rare feat. This all comes after the movie “Get Out,” a horror film about racism, also scored 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It has since dropped to 99 percent, which is still quite impressive.
To be fair, since it has only been a week, there is, of course, a chance that the “Dear White People” rating will drop, but for now, Simien and his cast are having the last laugh.
