Jimmy And Rosalynn Carter Are Urging Americans To Wear Masks

The longest-married presidential couple has long been committed to improving global health.

To help curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control has recommended that everyone wear cloth face coverings in public, particularly when near others outside of their household and when social distancing is difficult to maintain.

Now, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, are joining in the effort to encourage Americans to wear masks to help save lives.

On July 11, their charity, The Carter Center, tweeted out a photo of the couple wearing matching masks, along with the message, “Please wear a mask to save lives”:

The tweet has more than 1,000 retweets and comments and more than 3,000 likes

In the replies, people expressed their support for the Carters’ message.

“Always an example of what America is truly about,” wrote @firekatz11. “Thank you for being a shining star.”

“Thank you for being concerned & a voice of reason!” wrote @DaneHall798. “Stay healthy!”

The former presidential couple, who became the longest-married presidential couple late last year, launched The Carter Center in 1992. The organization works on behalf of a number of humanitarian causes, including improving health on a global scale.

Back in March 2020, the center encouraged its donors to support local charities aiding in the pandemic relief effort.

“As you are well aware, our country is facing a health crisis,” reads a statement on The Carter Center site. “Though the behaviors of COVID-19 are not fully known, what we do know makes it a global threat to our physical and economic health.”

The statement went to praise those who have stepped up to address the disaster before urging supporters to forgo donations to The Carter Center in lieu of those that directly support relief for the pandemic.

“It is in this spirit that we ask you to forgo your next gift for the work of The Carter Center and direct it to a local group that is reducing the suffering caused by this pandemic,” it says. “Each of us asks you to concentrate on the needs of your family, friends, neighbors and all in your community. Your commitment will help stop this threat.”
