While the coming of summer may mean trying to find the perfect swimsuit, it also means making time to eat plenty of ice cream.
While I am under the belief that you should just eat however much ice cream you wish, if you’re watching your waistline for any reason, going all out on a pint in a single sitting may not be on your summer schedule.
It can be this year, however, thanks to a brand new line of ice cream from Häagen-Dazs that comes complete with the added bonus of fewer calories! Its new line of light ice cream, cleverly dubbed Heaven, has one-third fewer calories, half the fat and 25% less total sugar per serving than regular Häagen-Dazs ice cream, according to a release from the company.
The light ice cream also features ultra-filtered milk, no artificial sweeteners and non-GMO ingredients. It will be available at retailers nationwide starting this month for around $5.49 per pint.
The new collection features four flavors that are available in 14-ounce containers with 230 calories or less per serving. Those flavors include chocolate sea salt caramel, strawberry waffle cone, peanut butter chip and cold brew espresso chip. Each pint includes extras like bits of caramel, crunchy pieces of chocolate-covered waffle cone, peanut butter, chocolate chips or chocolate espresso chips.
The company’s claim that the new Heaven ice cream contains one-third fewer calories than typical ice cream is true — with a catch. It depends upon what flavor of the new line you get and what flavor of Häagen-Dazs you’re comparing it to. For example, a serving of the new Heaven chocolate sea salt caramel contains 230 calories, which is about one-fifth less calories than the company’s traditional chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream but is about one-third less than the company’s banana peanut butter chip ice cream from its Decadent Collection line.
If you can’t find the new Häagen-Dazs Heaven line at your local grocery store yet, you should be able to find some other lower-calorie ice creams like Halo Top, which ranges from 280-380 calories for an entire pint.
That brand also has a new keto-friendly series with seven flavors, like chocolate cheesecake, caramel butter pecan and jelly donut. The Keto Series flavors have net carbs ranging from 5-10 grams and calories ranging from 410-630 per pint — lower than regular ice cream, but a bit higher than Halo Top’s normal offerings.
Other lower-calorie or lower-carb ice creams on the market include Rebel Creamery ice cream, which is available nationwide at stores like Kroger, ShopRite and Publix, and Keto Pint, which you can find at stores like Whole Foods, Safeway and Costco or order online.
Breyers also makes a low-carb frozen dairy dessert called CarbSmart. It comes in three different flavors — vanilla, chocolate and peanut butter — as well as in a line of ice cream bars. The bar flavors include vanilla, almond, caramel swirl and mint fudge.
If you don’t care about calories this summer but love ice cream, you may want to indulge in the Cheesecake Factory’s new collection of cheesecake ice cream that comes in seven flavors: birthday cake, chocolate, cookies and cream, Key lime, original, salted caramel and strawberry.
