Green bean casserole is a staple on many people’s Thanksgiving tables. If you love it as much as I do, chances are that not all the crispy fried onions make it into the casserole; some just so happen to pop into your mouth as a snack.
Thanks to the creators of those delectable little onions, you no longer have to wait for Thanksgiving, or even dinner, for that matter. Six months ahead of the big feast, French’s has turned the whole casserole into a savory snack: French’s green bean casserole snack mix!
Made with French’s fried onions, crisp vacuum-fried green beans and mushrooms, the snack mix is seasoned just like the holiday favorite. Unlike the dish, everything in the snack mix is crispy and crunchy, not just the onions.
The mix will only be around for a limited time and while supplies last, so don’t delay in grabbing a bag. Right now the only place to get it is on French’s website, for $8.95 for a 16-ounce bag.
Green bean casserole was created in 1955 by Campbell’s test kitchen chef Dorcas Reilly, who worked at Campbell’s Home Economics Department before leaving in 1961 and returning in 1981. She eventually retired as manager of Campbell’s kitchen in 1988.
Throughout her time with the company, she came up with multiple now-classic recipes, from tuna noodle casserole to tomato soup meatloaf. Her green bean casserole has become a holiday dinner staple thanks to its delicious taste and easy recipe, as it only requires a can of Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, green beans, salt and pepper and French’s crispy fried onions.
While the original recipe is beloved by pretty much everyone, if you do want to jazz it up a bit, Campbell’s has tweaked the recipe over the years to include other ingredients, like cheese, bacon, sun-dried tomatoes and even wine.
