An ‘Ace Ventura’ Reboot May Be In The Works

Alrighty then.

“Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” the movie that made a star out of Jim Carrey, may be getting a reboot. According to Deadline, a production company that owns the rights to the 1994 film is interested in reviving the franchise. (In addition to the original movie, there’s also the 1995 sequel “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls” and the 2009 direct-to-video “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Jr.”)

Morgan Creek Entertainment Group announced that their idea is not to remake the original story but, rather, to produce “a new movie in the spirit of the original.” Since it’s unclear whether Jim Carrey would reprise his role, one idea that’s been floated around is a story in which Carrey’s character would basically pass the torch to someone new. The potential plot would revolve around Ace Ventura’s long-lost son or daughter, who shows up on Ace’s doorstep and decides to get into the family business. (See “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” for an example of a reboot where a new young star is mentored by the older, titular character.)

If you consider that Jim Carrey made the sequel “Dumb and Dumber To” in 2014, 20 years after the first movie, it’s possible he may want to return Ace Ventura, if not as the star of the movie, then at least in a cameo role.

The original film tells the story of a goofy detective who solves the case of the missing Miami Dolphins mascot. When the movie was released in 1994, it was a box office success, grossing $107 million worldwide. It also quickly became a cult classic with many quotable lines.

Fans of the movies have mixed feelings about the prospect of a reboot, with some tweeting that they are “so down” to watch a new film, while others call it “the worst thing” they’ve ever heard.

However, since sequels to classic films like “Star Wars” and “Blade Runner” have been made in recent years and haven’t been totally terrible, we think a new Ace Ventura film could be a fun idea, especially if Jim Carrey decides to come back in the main role.
