In 1999, the “Cruel Intentions” cast was “old enough to know better, but too young to care.” The movie quickly became a cult classic (not to mention, a box office hit, earning $75 million), and now, 20 years later, the film is returning to theaters in a special anniversary event.
For one week only, “Cruel Intentions” fans can enjoy the film on the big screen. Beginning on March 22, you can see a restored version of this 1999 classic in the movie theater (lace-up jeans, butterfly clips and frosted lipstick are optional, but perfectly suitable). Just check whether a theater near you is playing it at cruelintentions.com.
Starring Ryan Phillipe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair, Joshua Jackson, Tara Reid, Swoosie Kurtz and Sean Patrick Thomas, “Cruel Intentions” is a virtual smorgasbord of the 2000s most-desirable young stars.
The soundtrack is also emblematic of the time period, with music by Placebo, The Verve, Fatboy Slim, Marcy Playground, Counting Crows and The Cardigans.
The movie was infamous for its girl-on-girl liplock between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair, and even recent television airings of “Cruel Intentions” have edited out of the kiss.
In 2015, “Cruel Intentions” was given the Broadway treatment, and it is now preparing to undergo a national tour (check out their website to see if Kathryn and Sebastian are coming to a city near you). You can also get the cast soundtrack, chock-full of all your favorite 2000s hits, on Amazon.
Much has changed since Cruel Intentions’ original release. Stars Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe are no longer together (they divorced in 2007), Sarah Michelle Gellar is the mother of two, and Joshua Jackson is no longer platinum blonde.
For her part, Selma Blair recently made national headlines when she talked bravely about her health struggles. Blair, who was diagnosed with MS, shared how difficult it was for her to receive help for her illness, and how her complaints were not taken seriously by her doctors.
