Today’s prom may be all about bling, glamorous dresses and limo rides, but it’s not surprising to know that prom (short for “promenade”) started as a much different tradition.
Proms were first held at Northeastern colleges and universities with the purpose of promoting social etiquette and manners in each year’s graduating class. These days, prom is less about social etiquette and more about going to a party with your friends.
And in that respect, celebrity kids are just like every other kid. Take a look at how these celebrity offspring do prom.
Maya Hawke, the daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, bucked the strapless/sparkly/fake tan/big hair prom combo. She opted for a far more chic ensemble for her high school dance, accessorized with fabulous red patent Mary Janes by Prada.
Her makeup artist Tina Turnbow, who shared this photo to her Instagram, told Marie Claire that Hawke’s bob cut was inspired by Brigitte Bardot, circa 1977, and her makeup reminiscent of French actress Anna Karina.
Since graduating high school in 2016, Hawke has followed in her parents’ footsteps, leaving the prestigious drama program at The Juilliard School to play Jo March in the PBS miniseries adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women.”
Ming Lee Simmons
For her 2017 junior prom, Ming Lee Simmons wore a silky champagne gown with a thigh split, minimal accessories and a sleek high ponytail.
Her famous mom, business mogul Kimora Lee Simmons, shared a proud photo on Instagram, revealing that she had been “crying all week” and that she had also designed her daughter’s dress — which she called the “Ming Ming,” of course. Kimora also revealed that she had asked Ming if her dad, Russell Simmons, could drive her to prom. The answer was a resounding “No.”
Dia Nash, the daughter of Emmy award-winning TV host and actress Carol Denice “Niecy” Nash, went to her prom in 2017 clad in a full-length yellow gown that any Disney princess would be proud of. Niecy, who is also a model and producer and has starred in “Claws” on TNT since 2017.
Director Jude Apatow and actress Leslie Mann’s eldest daughter Maude has appeared (as her on-screen mom’s real-life daughter) in several of her parents’ film projects, including “This is 40,” “Funny People” and “Knocked Up.” She looked super-chic at her prom in a vintage-inspired satin and lace dress, accessorized with a classic corsage.
In 2018, “Welcome to Marwen” star Mann revealed that Maude had dropped out of Northwestern University because the cold Chicago-area weather was making her miserable.
Paris Jackson, daughter of the late Michael Jackson and nurse Debbie Rowe, made a bold statement on her prom night in May 2016, dying her hair blue to match her date and BFF Melissa Lauren’s dress. Jackson wore a suit to the Wildwood School prom at the Casa Del Mar Hotel in Santa Monica, with a tie in the same shade of blue as her hair.
Since her graduation, Jackson has carved out a successful career as a model and bagged acting roles in Lee Daniels’ girl group TV drama “Star” and the movie “Gringo.”
The only daughter of A-list parents Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, Lily-Rose Depp is now a name in her own right, having covered both British and French Vogue and starred in the films “Yoga Hosers,” “La Danseuse” and “Planetarium” alongside Natalie Portman.
In 2016 Depp attended her high school prom in Los Angeles, wearing a peach-colored iridescent gown that may have been by Chanel, as the young model had recently secured her second campaign for the fashion house.
As the daughter of rapper Lil Wayne and star of her own reality TV show with her mom Toya Wright, Reginae Carter is used to life in front of the cameras. She looked every inch the star in her senior prom photos in 2017.
Wright shared her own excitement on social media, gushing on Instagram about “my baby on the way to her senior prom.”
Carter gave her social media followers the full rundown on her outfit, revealing that her dress was by Yousef Al Jasmi, her shoes by Stuart Weitzman, her makeup by Mimi Johnson and her hair by Rikya Taylor.
Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber’s son, model Presley Gerber, wore all black to his prom in 2016. Part of his routine involved a “sock swap” — which he documented on Instagram. Nobody wants to wear grubby white sports socks to their prom, right? Presley, who is now signed to DNA Models, attended his graduation from Malibu High School the following year, posing for celebratory pictures with his sister and fellow model, Kaia.
